Titled “Jab Cross Slip Slip Hook” (something many of you may be very familiar with), this second-person/submersion narrative explains how boxing is a macrocosm of a chess game and throws you right there in the ring!
Author and professional/tech writer Zachary Zolud confirmed first-hand that MK Boxing was one of the primary inspirations for writing the piece, which was published by The University of Massachusetts Lowell.
If you have a minute, take a look at it! We hope you like it!
The original published text can be found at author’s blog >>>
And come by sometime to see what inspired this work .
When we hear about boxing most of the times we remember a brutal sport where two people fight each other with their fists until one of them wins.
That’s why boxing as a fitness class is very underestimated.
First of all, boxing classes are provided in a safe environment under close control of a coach. There is a number of things a boxer is not allowed to do inside the ring. This helps in preventing injury and keeps matches from degenerating into an uncontrolled brawl. Boxing gloves are made from padded leather, designed to protect the hands as well as reduce the damage done to an opponent. Under the gloves, the hands are carefully wrapped in athletic bandages.
Secondly, fighting on a ring or not is absolutely your choice. You can learn boxing punches without stepping a ring if you don’t want to do that. The basic skills are the same – you learn to jab, uppercut and hook; you work on footwork and speed, core strength and agility, and power and flexibility. Here in MK Boxing Gym we also teach MMA-style (mixed martial arts) kicking sequences.
And the most important, boxing has a lot of health-related benefits.
Boxing as a fitness activity enables the average person to improve athletic skills, all without having to take a punch. If you’re hoping to get in great shape and improve your health, you just might want to sign up for a membership to our boxing gym.
There are a number of reasons why.
Speaking about cardiovascular health. The whole idea of a cardio workout – to place a moderate amount of stress on your body, so that your heart and lungs are challenged enough to make beneficial physiologic adaptations to support the higher level of physical activity. But how you choose to place stress on your heart and lungs is up to you. As long as you keep your heart rate up during your workout, there’s no reason you can’t punch, kick, and jump your way to a healthy heart in a boxing gym.
We provide boxing classes for men and women, teens and kids, girls and boys in age range from 12 years old (or younger) to those in their 60’s.

Left – Tyson Fury beating Wladimir Klitchsko to win all 4 World Titles
Are you a little confused by all the different belts in boxing? With lots of different names around for all the different weight classes sometimes can be unclear just what the title a boxer is fighting for. Which is the most important? Is it prestigious? Why there’s so many? Let’s find out.
Unlike most sports, there is no single governing body which decides the rules of boxing, markets and promotes the sport and looks after its long-term future. Instead there are four governing bodies (IBF, WBA, WBO and WBC) and they all have their own belts respectively.
So in all 17 weight divisions we can have 4 different world champions.
The IBO and WBU (World Boxing Union) belts are meanwhile considered fringe titles.
These belts are awarded by, in order of incorporation:
Left- Klitschko brothers belt collection.
The World Boxing Association is the oldest and one of four major organizations was formed in 1962 in the United States but is now based in Panama. The World Boxing Association can be traced back to the original National Boxing Association, organized in the United States in 1921. The WBA has been plagued with charges of corruption for years. In a 1982 interview, the promoter Bob Arum claimed that he had to pay off WBA officials to obtain rankings for his fighters. This corruption led to many supporters losing faith in the organization and there new organizations were established.
The World Boxing Council is often regarded as the most prestigious world title of them all as it is the belt every fighter wants. The WBC first was formed in Mexico in 1963, a year after the WBA. The WBC has held some of the best high profile fights ever watched. Many fighters such as Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Sugar Ray Leonard, Floyd Mayweather and Joe Calzaghe have all held a WBC title. Currently the WBC hosts some of the biggest names in boxing, Gennady Golovkin or “GGG” holds the middleweight title and Deontay Wilder holds the heavyweight title.
The International Boxing Federation) was preceded by the United States Boxing Association (USBA). It was created in 1983, after Bob Lee failed in an attempt to become the WBA president. The IBF’s first world champion was Marvin Camel, a former World Boxing Council world cruiserweight champion who won the IBF’s belt in the same division. There are 17 divisions in the IBF, with weights divisions ranging from mini flyweight right up to heavyweight where Anthony Joshua currently holds the title.
The World Boxing Organization is based in Puerto Rico. It was formed as part of a divide from the WBA (started after a group of Puerto Rican and Dominican businessmen broke out of the WBA’s 1988 annual convention in Isla Margarita, Venezuela over disputes regarding what rules should be applied). In the lighter weight divisions, however, long-reigning champions during the 1990s such as Chris Eubank, Johnny Tapia, and Naseem Hamed gave the WBO title increasingly more prestige. Other big names to mention are Joseph Parker) and Billy Joe Saunders who respectively hold the heavyweight title and middleweight titles in the WBO.
The four bodies rarely agree to work together because they all make money from charging sanction fees – which allow fights to take place for their titles. That makes holding more than one belt exceptionally difficult in the sport.

We are proud and happy to welcome our new instructor in jiu jitsu/grappling – Herb Chao .
Herb found jiu jitsu/grappling in 2011 through a friend who was an avid MMA fan. Having spent his childhood learning Tae Kwon Do and observing professional wrestling, jiu jitsu/grappling was a new branch of the martial arts that intrigued him quickly. Always keeping an open mind, Herb studies various styles of jiu jitsu/grappling and encourages others to do the same.
Herb is an active member and contributor to the Harvard Jiu Jitsu Club where he helps teach and also assists with the Annual Harvard Spring Tournament where various college BJJ clubs like BU, Umass-Lowell, Princeton, Umass-Amherst, Colombia, Uconn and Tufts come to showcase their skills. He has also competed, refereed, score kept, and helped clean up for various BJJ tournaments such as Good Fight, Grappling Industries, and Dragons Lairs.
The jiu jitsu/grappling classes will begin with a warmup consisting of common jiu jitsu movements such as shrimping, forward rolls, back rolls etc. The second portion will be technique where students have a chance to learn and drill 1-2 key positions and concepts such as guard, half guard, passing, etc. Afterwards people will have the option to either continue drilling and ask questions, or to spar (also referred to as rolling, open roll). Class finally concludes with everyone circling up for announcements before shaking hands and dismissal.
The class is a nogi based focus on grappling, however for those who have a background with the gi (or are interested in learning about it) are welcome to bring their Gi to incorporate into their rolling.
Any questions please feel free to ask.

Some people love winter, some people – don’t. But we (those who live in Massachusetts) have no other options other than “live” it or “survive” it. Woburn, MA maybe is not the coldest place on the Earth, but still cold enough.
In this pre-Christmas time we want to add some fun to this coldness outside. Read this and give us a smile or a “Like”!
If you live in a warmer climate, winter is a nice time of year when the temperature dips into 60 degrees Fahrenheit. If you live in a colder climate, winter is a horrible time of year when you battle nature’s attempt to freeze everything that gets in its way.
If you live in a warmer climate, typically winter weather is mild, there maybe some rain here and there. If you live in a colder climate, typically winter weather is intense. It could start snowing as early as mid-October and stop snowing as late as the end of March, or even the beginning of April if you are really unlucky.
If you live in a warmer climate, winter is (light) sweater weather. It’s nice being able to break out the sweaters, which can accent your outfit nicely. If you live in colder climates, winter is the season when everyone looks like marshmallows.
Your mother probably never let you leave the house without a hat.
If you live in a warmer climate, the holiday season is a pleasant time to gather with family to celebrate respective holidays and to appreciate each other. If you live in a colder climate, the holiday season is a battle against the snow to get to where you are going. We have all seen that same situation in movies in which the character is trying to fly home for the holidays, but the snow causes the flight to be canceled.
If you live in a warm climate, winter doesn’t affect your activities as much. You can still go outside and do things. If you live in a cold climate, winter derails your life.
Try not to avoid going outside as much as possible. If no you can run from only the door to the car, add some gym activities in this run. Being in a gym is more fun and healthier than staying in bed under your warm blanket all day.
MK Boxing gym is here for you all this cold season.
By the way, our WINTER SPECIAL DISCOUNT IS ACTIVATED! Get 1 year of unlimited gym access for just $59 per month. Take it while it lasts.
Call us (781) 376-4269 And come 116 Cummings Park Drive, Woburn, MA 01801People start to train boxing for a variety of reasons and set different goals. Some come approach boxing as a tool for self-defense, some come for fitness, and some have aspirations to compete. Here are few suggestions how to start your training in boxing.
Do you know what you need to become a boxer? To get in shape, learn how punch, learn how to defend, etc.?
First and foremost, is to find a boxing gym to train. Because of popularity of fitness and yoga classes, this is often easier said than done. Keep in mind that not just any place that “has boxing” will do.
Amateur boxing in the United States is managed by USA Boxing, which is responsible for the sport all the way up through the elite ranks of our national Olympic team. Events arranged outside of this organization are considered exhibitions or interclub “smokers.” To participate in USA Boxing events, you will have to go through a physical examination, proving that you are of sound mind and body and pay your annual dues to the nearest Local Boxing Committee (LBC).
Fortunately for you, this is easy. The amateur boxing circuit is a small world, both locally and nationally, and once your coach decides that you are ready, he will be your best resource for attending and competing in events. There are two basic types: the tournament and the local club fight. Tournaments are more well-known, as just about everyone has heard of the Golden Gloves, Ringside’s National Championships, and others. The second option is when a local club, business, or charity event sponsors a fight card.
Club fights are all over the board in terms of the size of an audience, venue, and location. One notable difference on club fights is that you don’t have to fall within a specific weight class. Matches are typically made between the two fighters who are closest in weight and experience.
Come to MK Boxing and train at one of the best Boxing training programs around. We will find the best options to respond your initial goals, either physical fitness though boxing, or professional boxing training. All ages and backgrounds are welcome.

Rocky Marciano Tournament: Ryan Scottron Semi-Final Fight
The first martial arts film was made in Shanghai in 1905. From the beginning in China there formed five martial arts cinema genres.
Films of the latter type are generally considered to be artistically superior films, but many films of the former type are commercially successful and well received by fans of the genre. One of the earliest Hollywood movies to employ the use of martial arts was the 1955 film Bad Day at Black Rock.
Martial arts films contain many characters who are martial artists, and these roles are often played by actors who are real martial artists. If not, actors frequently train in preparation for their roles, or the action director may rely more on stylized action or film making tricks like camera angles, editing, doubles, undercranking, wire work, and computer-generated imagery. Trampolines and springboards can also be used to increase the height of jumps. These techniques are sometimes used by real martial artists as well, depending on the style of action in the film.
Martial arts films have been produced all over the world, but the genre has been dominated by Hong Kong action cinema, peaking from 1971 with the rise of Bruce Lee until the mid-1990s with a general decline in the industry. Other notable figures in the genre include Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, and Donnie Yen.
Hollywood has also participated in the genre with actors such as Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Steven Seagal, Brandon Lee (son of Bruce Lee), Wesley Snipes, Gary Daniels, Mark Dacascos, and Jason Statham.
Vladimir Matyushenko Has a Long History of Experience With MMA Techniques.
Vladimir Matyushenko found wrestling by need. He had to defend himself, had to get stronger. Wrestling has never been a recreational activity for the man from Belarus. Growing up in the former Soviet Union was a struggle, and the young athlete viewed the sport as his ticket to a better life.
“I got [beaten up] in school a couple times, then said that was enough,” he recalls. By the time he was 15, the young Belarusian had moved out of his parents’ home into a specialized school for athletes.
Before turning 18, Vladimir Matyushenko had effectively beaten two Olympic wrestlers — Dave Schultz and Kevin Jackson — around the same time.
Vladimir Matyushenko eventually debuted in the cage in September 1997, beating three opponents in one night, employing upper-body MMA techniques in each fight (neck crank in the first; punches in the second two). “I got $5,000 and I didn’t get hurt,” he says of his first fight for the International Fighting Championships, “so it kind of got me addicted.”
Building a 9-1 record in smaller MMA promotions, Vladimir Matyushenko debuted his MMA techniques in the UFC at UFC 32: Showdown in the Meadowloands in New Jersey. He later went ahead to show his effective MMA techniques in the International Fight League. Vladimir Matyushenko’s defeat of Alex Schoenauer on November 3, 2007, made him the organization’s first-ever light-heavyweight champion.
Returning to the UFC in 2009, Vladimir Matyushenko has faced Igor Pokrajac, Eliot Marshall, Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson. In September 2012, he tore his Achilles tendon while training and had to pull out of a scheduled bout against Matt Hamill.
Vladimir Matyushenko faced Joey Beltran in April 2014 at Bellator 116. Despite winning the first two rounds, he lost the fight in the third round due to submission after winning the first two rounds. Following this loss, Vladimir Matyushenko retired from MMA competition.
Vladimir Matyushenko: Official UFC Profile Page
“When he kicks — [using a] low kick or high kick — you use normal-type technique,” Vladimir Matyushenko explains. “So when he kicks, I block him [with] my foot. And I move my foot back so I’m ready to shoot. In order for him to strike again, he’ll have to bring his foot back. But I’m not going to wait until he puts his foot down. I’m gonna go back with his foot and I’m already [in position].
“With a takedown, a lot of people make the mistake of driving forward without putting pressure [on their opponent]. You want to tilt over this leg, so you put pressure on it so [your opponent] can’t jump on it and push forward.”
As you push your opponent toward the ground, Vladimir Matyushenko explains, you have two choices: You can go with him to the ground, or you can keep standing and resituate on his side to launch a strike from above.

Interesting to know that it’s not your muscles that determine how quickly and strong you can hit, but the quality of your nervous system.
Research has shown that the first sign of a rapid movement may actually be a decrease in muscle activity rather than an increase. This little-known phenomenon is called the “pre-movement silent period,” and it can enable you to strike faster and stronger.
One of the qualities of expert martial artists is the ability to throw a punch or kick without warning. From a ready position, they explode into motion. The attack is so sudden and smooth that it seems to materialize out of thin air.
When novices attack, it’s a different story. Their motion can be seen a mile away — mainly because they perform a large counter-movement, or windup, before the technique.
The purpose of this counter-movement is to allow the primary muscles to start activating well before the attack actually begins. When the forward motion is initiated, the muscles are already in a high state of excitation, producing a powerful attack.
The counter-movement is a natural mechanism designed to produce a quick and forceful action. However, that’s a disadvantage in the martial arts because it telegraphs the movement. It takes a fair amount of practice to be able to launch an attack with only forward motion, and it’s even harder to make the same attack a powerful one.
Fortunately, the human body is a remarkable machine that’s capable of adapting to virtually any conditions that are imposed on it. When you attack without the benefit of a counter-movement, you can compensate by using the pre-movement silent period.
To better understand the pre-movement silent period, it’s useful to examine a punch in a typical sparring session and determine what your muscles are doing. When you face your opponent in a ready stance, your muscles are in a state of mild contraction to fight the effects of gravity. A balance is struck: Too much tension will fatigue you and slow you down, and too little tension will allow your arms to drop.
So there you are with your hands up and ready to attack or defend at a moment’s notice. As you begin, you notice that your opponent has inadvertently let his guard drop. Never one to miss an opportunity, you decide that you’ll punch as hard and as fast as you can. Your brain sends the signal down your spinal cord, through your motor neurons and finally to your individual muscle fibers. However, what happens next may not be what you’d expect.
During the switch from posture to rapid motion, your muscles can actually turn off or stop contracting. The “silence” lasts for only about a tenth of a second, but it causes your muscle fibers to contract all at once, rather than in a graduated fashion. This synchronization is important because it produces a large initial muscle twitch, which facilitates the rapid production of force. The end effect is your fist being catapulted toward the target with great force — and without having been telegraphed.

What does the ounces indicate on boxing gloves and what boxing gloves size is right for me? Now you’ll find out all about the size of boxing gloves as well as information about the ounces on boxing gloves.
In general, classic boxing gloves and Muay Thai gloves (which are actually same) do not have any size differences. In general, a child’s glove looks the same size as an adult’s. But to differentiate the boxing gloves from each other – the weight or the padding of the gloves is differentiated. Here come the ounces.
The weight or the padding of the gloves is expressed in terms of ounces of weight, which is printed in 99% of the cases as OZ indication on the gloves.
Generally the gradation is divided into 2 ounces steps:
8Oz = 226,8 Grams
10Oz = 283,5 Grams
12Oz = 340,2 Grams
14Oz = 396,9 Grams
16Oz = 453,6 Grams
usw.
One ounce is 28.3495 grams
So if a glove has 10 ounces, the padding weight is 283.495 grams – as you noticed it can make a huge difference whether you are fighting with 16 ounces or 8 ounces.
Info: MMA gloves have different sizes like S,M,L.
Generally 8 ounce gloves are least padded and also the lightest. They are therefore suitable for children in the training, as well as for people who want to refine their striking techniques, as they can feel through the glove the hit.
10 ounce gloves are a standard of competition and are used in nearly all series. They are an optimal compromise of impact, weight and upholstery.
12 ounce and 14 ounce gloves are often used in training. They are a bit heavier and so it is easier for a fighter to keep permanently 10 ounces up, since he has always trained with 12 or 14.
16 ounces are most padded, thus providing the greatest protection to the fighter his hands and his opponent. 16 ounces are most frequently used in the sparring, as there is so simple enough protection in the training. Some boxers also go to workout with 16 ounces in training to train with a higher weight on their fists.
/br
Of course, you do not need to buy all weights and in most clubs and camps gloves are provided anyway. In principle it is therefore worth to buy 12oz gloves and / or 14oz gloves. 12oz are in our opinion ideal for training, 14oz good for some sparring and training.
With what kind of gloves do you practice? What differences do you notice between the weights?

Breathing is an important life process. In order to provide the body with optimal oxygen is the proper breathing technique especially important in sports. Find out all about the breathing in sports like Martial Arts and boxing.
Breathing is a natural reflex that is controlled automatically. However, anyone who does sports such as Boxing, Kickboxing,MMA or Conditioning should train the proper breathing techniques. This increases the efficiency in training and the fight. Breathing can also be consciously controlled and optimized.
When breathing air flows through the mouth or nose into the lungs. The air is cleaned by tiny hairs in the nose first and humidified and warmed by the mucous membranes. By the alveoli, the oxygen is finally absorbed into the blood circulation. The other way round the carbon dioxide is also released through the alveoli of from the blood into the air.
By the respiratory muscles, and organs are thus supplied with oxygenated blood. This is the reason why the body can remain fully efficient. So the proper breathing plays a crucial role especially in the martial arts.
Breathing is controlled automatically. This is done automatically in the brain or respiratory center of the medulla oblongata. This chemoreceptors respond to the carbon dioxide content of the blood and are responsible for the respiratory charm.
Nevertheless, the breathing can be controlled consciously. Athletes make this often to use. But even in meditation, controlled breathing lead to inner peace and highest concentration.
Through proper breathing you can reach positive effects for the organs and the circulation in everyday life. Thus, the internal organs “massaged” by constantly breathing in and out. The heart benefits from deep breathing and is extremely relieved. So it is with deep breathing pulled through the diaphragm moving down and thus extended.
However, the improper breathing also have negative effects on our organism. The most common respiratory failure are due to the following causes:
These three factors have often great effects on respiration. So breathing is often shallow, and it stunted the finest capillaries in the lungs. The consequence is a lower oxygen uptake. The heart needs more beats per minute to perform better even at rest. The overall performance decreases.
Also back pain can have large effects on respiration. From reflective and self-protection, the deep inhalation is prohibited. As unpleasant pain can be avoided. However, the performance is also so reduced.
Pay attention especially in stress situation, if your breathing still remains low.
Check your posture by breathing in deeply aware. When you change it to breath in the air better your posture is wrong.
Do you have back pain affect during inhale deep? Breathe deep and strong! Do you feel now somewhere tension or pain, then you are suffering from back problems that restrict your breathing.
Simple tricks for better breathing in everyday life:
Breathing is also subconsciously influenced by external influences or our state of mind. To get a total harmonious breathing and a better appreciation of life you should always listen to yourself. Also meditation exercises such as yoga or meditation can lead to better breathing and are under Thai boxing and MMA fighters very popular.
Breathing exercises before training and in everyday life:
Deep breathing to stimulate and relieve the internal organs:
The deep breathing can work wonders in stressful situations in everyday life. But even before a fight or training it can help prepare for the challenges ahead, and to provide the organs optimally with oxygen.
How you breathe deeply:
Stand or sit in upright position. Let your arms hang loose and relaxed while laterally. Breathe now deep and strong through your nose. You should breathe deeply so that the air passes into the stomach and chest. Then you breathe out slowly through your mouth.
Breathing in boxing training:
In boxing, kickboxing or other martial arts the right breathing technique is a great advantage. So you should always exhale forcefully in rhythm with your punches and kicks. Therefore, you can hear the most of the fighters always loud moaning or crying during the workout or fight. This helps to put the power completely in the punch.
A training wisdom: “If you do not hear yourself breathing, you may not even breathe too!”

Many children are getting into the sport of boxing. Training in boxing will not only improve the body, it will improve the mind. This sport is great for anti-bullying since children will gain confidence and self- assurance.
The sport of boxing can be very safe if taught properly. It is actually much safer than football and hockey. Each student will receive top of the line leather boxing gloves. All contact will be practiced using protective shields, pads, focus mitts and heavy bags led by an instructor. There is no direct contact with one student striking another student.
The class will involve the use of the heavy bags; focus mitt training and boxing combinations. There is a heavy emphasis on conditioning such as running, burpees, pushups, abs, and other cross conditioning methods.
The kids will learn how to slip and avoid punches. The focus on technique, form, conditioning, power, speed, timing, coordination and balance will be emphasized.
There will also be a graduation ceremony for all students.

Almost every Muay Thai fighter wears it. Without the Mongkol many fighters do not enter the ring. What is going on with Mongkhon (Mongkol), and why the headband for traditional fighters is so important, you will learn here.
At times of war Thailand’s soldiers wore before battle always headbands as a talisman. This should protect the soldiers from harm and bring happiness. Since the art of Muay Thai is closely connected with the history of the country, this rite was maintained up to the present time and is almost unchanged till today.
The Mongkhon, or Mongkol (headband) and Pra Jiad (armbands) are often worn into the ring before the match begins. They originate back in times when Thailand was in a constant state of war, where young men would tear off pieces of a loved one’s clothing (often their mother’s sarong) and wear it to battle for good luck as well as to ward off harmful spirits. The Mongkol is a blessed headband and thus a talisman. In modern times the Mongkol (lit. meaning holy spirit, luck, and protection) is worn as a tribute to the gym that the Muay Thai fighter is fighting out of.
Traditionally, fighters receive their Mongkon from the coach when they trained hard enough and are ready to represent the Muay Thai Camp in the ring with honor. The coach must be fully convinced of the skills of his Muay Thai student. Fighters wear the Mongkon also for paying respect to the coach, the Muay Thai school, and the sport itself. In addition, so that the gratitude and solidarity to all people is expressed, which accompanied the fighters on the difficult path to the fight. Often after the fighter has finished the Wai_khru ceremony, the trainer will take the Mongkol off of his head and place it on their corner of the ring for luck. For the fight it is however not worn. This brings the fighters luck and protects him from possible dangers. So the Mongkhon is a highly spiritual object in Muay Thai.
For women it was long time forbidden to wear a Mongkol, as this will bring bad luck. Meanwhile, however, some Muay Thai schools and trainers have abandoned these views and also allow their female students to wear a Mongkol in the ring.
The Mongkol is awarded by a consecration to the spiritual force that is said to it. The ceremony can be performed both by a Buddhist monk or a Muslim Imam. Usually the coaches and the fighters themselves take part to this consecration. Just taking part in such a ceremony, the self-consciousness of the Fighter is often strengthened, which can have a positive effect in combat. Even fighters who do not live the teachings of Buddhism may participate in the ceremony and be protected.
These days, the Muay Thai headbands are made from ropes, ribbons and silk materials.
Whether the fighter is a Buddhist or not, it is common for them to bring the Mongkol to a Buddhist monk who blesses it with good luck prior to stepping into the ring.
Martial Art is not only the way of mastering fighting skills alongside with building strong personality, but in some cases it is the way to Enlightenment.
People nowadays may find it unusual to think of religious philosophy as the backbone of fighting training, yet that’s just what we find when we examine the military class of early Japan. Westerners are often confused by the term “religious philosophy” because in the West, those two subjects are distinct schools of thought. Until recently in Japan, however, there was no separation: they were connected in the sense that religion was philosophy acted out as a way of living.
One of the more popular Eastern religions, Zen, concentrates on living life to the utmost in the here and now, as opposed to focusing on the afterlife. If Zen practitioners live in this very moment, all the rest — whatever else that may entail — will fall into place naturally. That includes the main concern of the samurai warriors: proper action in the midst of deadly combat.
Japanese warrior class regarded the sword as the weapon of choice. Because great strength of will and concentration, as opposed to just technical skill, are needed to succeed in lightning-fast blade duels, the samurai turned to Zen.
Zen began in India. Around 440 to 520, a priest named Bodhidharma taught that one could attain nirvana through meditation, not just through rigorous study of the sutra (scriptures). After learning the dharma (Buddhist teachings on law and duty), Bodhidharma was told to travel to China to teach this method. China, although previously exposed to doctrinal Buddhism, seemed to be a better prospect for large-scale acceptance of such teachings.
Some popular stories consider Bodhidharma as the founder of Shaolin kung fu. The idea of Bodhidharma influencing Shaolin boxing is based on a qigong manual written during the 17th century. Thereby Zen philosophy been introduced to Shaolin warriors.
Zen was a seedling that was planted during previous era and blossomed later in Japan too. From then on, Zen continued to color life in all aspects of Japanese culture — especially the samurai class, which was socially elevated in 1192 by the emergence of the shogun.

Although women have participated in boxing for almost as long as the sport has existed, female fights have been effectively outlawed for most of boxing’s history, with athletic commissioners refusing to sanction or issue licenses to women boxers, and most nations officially banning the sport. Reports of women entering the ring go back to the 18th century.
The first female boxer dates back to 1722, when Elizabeth Wilkinson challenged Hannah Hyfield to a bout through an ad she placed in the London Journal: “I, Elizabeth Wilkinson, of Clerkenwell, having had some words with Hannah Hyfield, and requiring Satisfaction, do invite her to meet me on the Stage and Box me.” Billing herself as the European Championess, she fought both men and women. In those days, the rules of boxing allowed kicking, gouging and other methods of attack not part of today’s arsenal. For six years, Hyfield fought both men and women professionally, wearing “close jackets, short petticoats, coming just below the knee, Holland drawers, white stockings and pumps,” according to the same newspaper advertisements.
In the late 1800s, Nell Saunders and Rose Harland fought the first women’s boxing match in the United States; the prize was a silver butter dish. Twenty-five years later, in 1904, boxing made its debut as an Olympic sport in St. Louis — men’s boxing was admitted as a competitive sport, but women’s boxing was limited to exhibition bouts.
By the late 1970s and into the early ’80s, women’s boxing was resurrected. Some of the first women to be licensed for boxing in the United States were Marian Trimiar, known as Lady Tyger, and Jackie Tonawanda; Cathy Davis, known as Cat, appeared as the first female boxer on the cover of The Ring magazine in 1978.
The International Boxing Association (amateur) accepted new rules for Women’s Boxing at the end of the 20th century and approved the first European Cup for Women in 1999 and the first World Championship for women in 2001.
Women’s boxing was not featured at the 2008 Olympics; however, on 14 August 2009, it was announced that the International Olympic Committee’s Executive Board (EB) had approved the inclusion of women’s boxing for the Games in London in the 2012 Olympics, contrary to the expectations of some observers.

Every 17th of March, the Thai people honor Nai Khanom Tom. That night is called “Boxer’s night” where every stadium of the country dedicates fights in honor of Nai Khanom Tom and his victory. A Nai Khanom Tom festival is also held in the beautiful ancient capital city of Ayutthaya.
It is the bedtime story for Thai children when dreaming about legends and warriors which have been protectors of Kings and the country.
The name Nai Khanom Tom is one that every Thai child knows and one that graces every book or publications about the sport. He is the one of the greatest Muay Thai hero.
Around 1774, he was captured along with other Thai prisonersIn 1774, Nai Khanom Tom was a war prisoner in Burma. The Burmese had captured him when they sacked and burnt Thailand’s ancient capital, Ayutthaya.
King Mangra of Burma heard of his rep and asked him to challenge 10(12) Burmese fighters. He was brought to Yangon in Burma, where the Burmese king Mangra was holding a festival .
The Burmese had their own martial art – one not unlike Muay Thai and its name is Parma. Parma relied heavily on the fist as the major weapon whereas Muaythai boxers were famous then and now for their skills in using elbows, knees, feet as well as fists in a fight. King Mangra wanted to see which fighting skill was superior and called for the best Siamese from the prisoners to fight his Burmese fighters. Nai Khanom Tom was the natural choice for the Thais as he was renowned for his Muaythai skills and his never die attitude.
Nai Khanom Tom was selected to fight against the Burmese champion. Nai Khanomtom did a Wai Kru (wai khru ram muay) pre-fight dance which puzzled all of the Burmese. When the fight began, he charged out and using punches, kicks, elbows, and knees, quickly pummeled the Burmese.
The referee was reported to have stated that the Burmese opponent was distracted by the Wai Kru, so the knockout was invalid. The King then asked if Nai Khanom Tom would fight nine other Burmese champions to prove himself. He agreed and fought them all, one after the other. Nai Khanom Tom went on to win the next fights and was given his freedom. He fought for His king, his country, his friends and the freedom for all.
King Mangra was one of the first to applaud the feat he had witnessed. “Every part of the Thai is blessed with venom even with his bare hands he can fell ten opponents”.
The King gave Nai Khanom Tom his freedom and he returned to the old Siam and is given a hero’s welcome.
Come to MK Boxing Gym Muay Thai class and we will practice together. Who knows maybe you are the next boxing hero like Nai Khanom Tom!
To many of us, Thai martial arts is Thai kickboxing or, as it is more commonly known, Muay Thai.
However, Muay Thai is technically not a martial art. It is a sport that’s been around since 1930. Its techniques are taken from the more lethal art of Muay boran, which originated from the older fighting style of ling lom (air monkey) via the ancient mother art of krabi krabong (stick and sword fighting).
Although the ancient forms of Muay Thai are Buddhist in nature, ling lom has its foundation in the Hindu legend of Ramayana, specifically the monkey god Hanuman, wherein the Muay Thai fights traditionally re-enacted the battling gods.
Thai fighting arts evolved because of the country’s historical conflicts with Burma. Muay Thai’s ancestral arts were first described in King Ramkamheng’s (1275-1317) Book of War Learning. In 1560, King Nareusan was captured by the Burmese. He was released when he defeated the top Burmese boxers. It was this event that brought about the birth of Muay Thai.
But there is a similar story that describes how Nai Khanom Tom took on 10 (12) Burmese fighters while imprisoned in Burma and was released in 1774. Arguably the most important fighter in Muay Thai history is Nai Khanom Tom, whose heroics have gone down in Thai folklore.
We will tell you this story in the next article. Stay tuned!

We hear a lot of sayings like “follow your dreams”. But if one comes from a person who actually reached success it becomes more meaningful.
Champion boxer Klitschko, 45, last fought in 2012, before relinquishing the WBC heavyweight title the following year to focus on a career in politics. Today the Mayor of Kiev (Ukraine) was presented with an award from Roy Jones Jnr on behalf of the WBC, as the ‘Eternal World Heavyweight Champion’. As a fighter he twice held the WBC heavyweight title, and never lost it in the ring.
We want to quote part of his speech after he got his award:
“Noting is impossible. I was born in the Soviet Union, a big country where professional boxing was forbidden. I would watch Mike Tyson when he became the youngest world heavyweight champion in 1986, and I said to my friends, ‘Do you know what boys? One day I will be fighting guys like that. One day I will be world heavyweight champion.
“And one day I wore that green belt that was once Tyson’s, that belonged to Muhammad Ali. For a while, it was mine.
“It’s very important to have a dream, and to do everything you can to make that dream come true.”
Follow your dreams and reach it!

For people who hear about MMA for the first time may think that it is a just a new kind of sports. But it is not. MMA has a long history. Fighters that practice fighting techniques have been testing their skills against one another likely before history even began to be recorded.
The history of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) dates back to the *Olympics of anchttp://www.mkboxing.com/admin/plugin/mediaient Greece. Mixed Martial Arts fights originated as hand-to-hand combat performed as a sport called pankration, from the Greek words pan and kratos, meaning “all powers.” Still, Greek Pankration, a fighting event that became a part of the Olympic Games in 648 B.C., is the first documented full contact, few rules combat competition in history. Pankration events were known for their brutality. Pankration was a popular event, and the competitors became heroes and the subjects of legends.
The teachings of ancient Greek pankration spread to India thanks to Alexander the Great and his habit of recruiting athletes as soldiers because of their strength and combat knowledge. A Buddhist monk traveling through India picked up on aspects of pankration and brought that knowledge to China, where it birthed Asian martial arts such as kung fu, judo, and karate.
As people branched into new lands, they took these arts and built on them, often creating a new style or form of martial art. For example, an expert in judo traveled the globe and ended up in Brazil to spread his teachings, an act that gave birth to the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
There have been many examples of full combat fights designed to measure one style against another. One of the more notable occurred in 1887 when then heavyweight boxing champion John L. Sullivan took on Greco-Roman wrestling champion William Muldoon. Muldoon reportedly slammed his adversary to the canvas in just a couple of minutes. Reinforcing this, many other reported matches between famous strikers and grapplers also took place in and around this time, with grapplers often demonstrating a significant advantage over their striking or stand up fighting counterparts.
Interestingly, MMA style competitions also sprouted up in England in the late 1800’s via Bartitsu events. Bartitsu pitted Asian and European fighting styles against one another. The inclusion of the Asian fighting styles made them somewhat unique for the time period.
In the early 1900’s, full contact combat with mixed styles began happening in a variety of places.
However, there were two spots that were perhaps more noticeable and noteworthy. First, there was valetudo in Brazil, which began in the early 1920’s. The history behind this is noteworthy enough when it comes to MMA to go into it further.
In 1914, a Kodokan Judo master by the name of Mitsuyo Maeda taught Brazil’s Carlos Gracie (Gastao Gracie’s son) the art of judo in appreciation of his father’s help with business in the country. This was an amazing turn of events as the Japanese tended to hide jujutsu and judo from the western world. From there, Carlos’s youngest and smallest brother Helio, refined the art that had been taught to Carlos into one that used less strength and more leverage in order to suit his more diminutive frame.
What came of this was Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a grappling art that taught practitioners how to utilize joint locks and choke holds to their advantage on the ground. In addition, one of Helio’s major accomplishments was in refining how fighters could compete from their backs utilizing a technique called the guard.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu performers did exceptionally well in mixed style valetudo matches in Brazil, one of which was Helio Gracie.
In addition, there were mixed martial arts matches being put on by Antonio Inoki in Japan in the 1970’s. One of these took place between Inoki himself and famed heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali on June 25, 1976. In reality, it appears that this 15 round draw, which netted Ali six million dollars and Inoki two million dollars, was staged. Further, several rules were put into place to help Ali just before the fight went off (including a rule that only allowed Inoki to kick if one of his knees were down). However, the match certainly generated a lot of interest in mixed style competitions.
Eventually, all of this led to the first UFC event in 1993. Modern Day Mixed Martial Arts is Born Via the UFC.
History had forgotten that wrestlers had done very well in past mixed martial arts matches. Besides, much had changed. Further, the mainstream United States had almost no idea whatsoever about the Gracie’s vale tudo exploits in Brazil. Which led to the following age-old question: which martial arts style was most effective?
That was the question that the original UFC competition and founders Art Davie, Robert Meyrowitz, and Helio Gracie’s son, Rorion, set out to answer on November 12, 1993.
The event, which pitted eight fighters against one another in a single elimination, one day tournament, was seen on pay per view and came to the masses live from the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado.
The tournament had few rules (including no decisions, time limits, or weight classes) and fighters in it with a variety of martial arts backgrounds.
Brazilian Jiu-Jisu (Royce Gracie, son of Helio), Karate (Zane Frazier), shootfighting (Ken Shamrock), Sumo (Telia Tuli), Savate (Gerard Gordeau), kickboxing (Kevin Rosier and Patrick Smith), and professional boxing (Art Jimmerson) were all represented. In sum, the event ended up showcasing Gracie Jiu Jitsu, as Royce defeated three fighters via submission in less than five minutes combined to take home victory. A total of 86,592 spectators witnessed his dominance via pay per view. In fact, the 170 pound Gracie won three of the first four UFC tournaments, proving in the eyes of many that his style of fighting was king.
Though the UFC is still by far the gold standard organization when it comes to the sport of MMA, there are many other organizations out there. Some of the more popular are Affliction, Strikeforce, and the WEC. Further, MMA is seen on television regularly and enjoys excellent pay per view buy numbers, especially via the UFC.

One of the most popular disciplines in MK Boxing gym is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class.
You may heard about Japanese Jiu-Jitsu (JJJ), but what is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)? Is there any difference?.
Japanese Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and a method of close combat for defeating an armed and armored opponent, in general. JJJ is more traditional, focusing on locks and throws. It is good if you want to learn techniques that could put down an attacker much more quickly and be more “street practical”, but may or may not actually work against strong guys in a real situation. Jiu-Jitsu is practiced in both traditional and modern sports forms. Derived sport forms include the Olympic sport and martial art of judo, which was developed by Kanō Jigorō in the late 19th century from several traditional styles of Jiu-Jitsu; and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which was derived from earlier (pre–World War II) versions of Kodokan judo.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, commonly known as BJJ, is a descendant of traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu. In the late 19th century, Jigoro Kano created judo, believing that the essence of Jiu-Jitsu was being lost as many schools ceased to emphasize live training and competition. By removing the striking elements of Jiu-Jitsu and the more dangerous aspects, he created an art based on throwing an opponent and then controlling him or submitting him on the ground. BJJ is good if you want to see results quickly and become a confident fighter on the ground. It is invaluable in a confrontation against one large unarmed attacker, but requires more time to neutralize your opponent. It is widely agreed to be the most chess-like martial art at high levels, and can give much intellectual fulfillment.

In our previous article we spoke about Muay Thai history and techniques. If you found it interesting, here is even more interesting documentary about Muay Thai – “Muay Thai Born for the fight” of 1997.
This documentation is a thoroughly researched film about the importance of Muay Thai in the Thai society.
In addition to the living in a Muay Thai Camp the legendary Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok can be seen. The atmosphere in the 90s there was exceptional and is still today the best in the whole of Thailand.
The documentary was made with the help of the Thai National Culture Commission, the Torusim Authority of Thailand and can thus safely be described as authentic and highly informative piece of Muay Thai history. Credits: Cojo Productions 1997.
If you are just about to choose what Martial Art or self defense classes to train in we suggest to start with Muay Thai.
Muay Thai is a good physical and mental discipline, and brilliant form of self defense.
Muay thai is a combat sport of Thailand. It uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. This is also known as “the art of eight limbs” because it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees, shins, being associated with a good physical preparation that makes a full-contact fighter very efficient.
This video nicely describes Muay Thai techniques of fighting.
The history of Muay Thai can be traced to the middle of the 16th century. During the battles between the Burmese of the Konbaung Dynasty and Siam, the famous fighter, Nai Khanomtom, was captured in the year 1767. The Burmese knew of his expertise in hand-to-hand combat and gave him an opportunity to fight for his freedom. Soon after winning the match, he was freed by his captors and allowed to return to Siam. He was acknowledged as a hero, and his fighting style became known as Siamese-Style boxing, later to be known as Muay Thai. This fighting style was soon to be recognized as a national sport.
Muay Thai became widespread internationally in the 20th century, when practitioners defeated notable practitioners of other martial arts.
If you now want to start your Muay Thai training right away, come to MK Boxing Gym and check out our Muay Thai classes on Tuesdays at 6:30pm-7:30pm. The class will be focused on men and women who have little or no experience in Muay Thai.
MK Boxing has perfect training conditions and a perfect instructor – Thong Pritchard. Thong started her training in Boxing and American Kickboxing Tournaments at the age of 18 in Nashville TN. Her father was a former Muay Thai champion. Thong Pritchard has competed in over 20 fights, and was the IKF Women’s Featherweight Champion in 2001.
It is known that physical exercises are good for health. Nevertheless, injuries in sports happen.
MK Boxing Gym encourages you to be safe while practicing.
We want to share few strategies for preventing injuries.
It is proven that increased joint and muscular mobility and flexibility will dramatically reduce the potential risk of injury. A range of mobility exercises should be employed. Many people are now turning towards yoga, which is an extremely positive addition to their training regime.
In our turn, MK Boxing Gym provides Cross-conditioning classes that are one of the most popular in our gym. You can join it almost everyday.
The Cross-conditioning class is meant to get the blood pumping, it focuses on body weight exercises and explosive movements to minimize injury and maximize results.
The Conditioning classes are led by an instructor, and are offered at no additional fee.
Tight muscles, bruises, and soft-tissue damage are common side-effects of intense training. All these symptoms should get an appropriate treatment that will reduce muscular inflammation, preventing any further trauma. Massage therapy helps the recovery from these effects.
You may think that it’s not connected to your training, but it is.
The correct nutritional sources of proteins, carbohydrates and fats are the building blocks of every living tissue in the body. The correct nutrition feeds the blood, muscles and cells of the body, therefore keeping them healthy and functioning in an optimum manner. A healthy body is under less stress, therefore will recover and recharge, and ultimately be stronger and more stable, and able to cope with the demands of the training camp.
The relevant training needs to be employed both at the right time, and when the body is ready and able to cope with the demands of that specific exercise. Sometimes the body needs progression in areas that are weak, and perhaps more importantly regression in areas that are working too hard and being placed under strain.
Sometimes less is more. A fighter needs to rest and master the art of doing nothing to allow their body to recover.

Today we want to speak about the role of Strength and Conditioning (S&C) in boxing.
Most of S&C exercises are designed to utilize current training techniques to improve athletes’ size, strength, quickness, and speed. You build strength and resistance during your training. That’s why we have a lot of options for power training in MK Boxing Gym.
Join MK Boxing Strength and Conditioning classes or Core Conditioning classes and Kickboxing + Total Conditioning classes with Mike K.
Nevertheless, you can practice at home too. Strength and Conditioning coach Cameron Goff shares a power workout designed to work on increasing explosive power in your punches and the core activation. These are the best and easy exercises to start with.

This power training workout should be done at least 2 per week – with at minimum of 1 day rest in between these sessions – during weeks four-seven of a 12-week training camp. Recover for 3-5 minutes in between sets (not to cause fatigue).
Start with the barbell on the floor, then sit back into a squat position and grip the barbell. Keep your arms fully locked and extended. Start to move the barbell in a straight line (back straight) up your shins towards your hips. As the barbell starts to reached your mid-thigh, make sure you drive your hips forward to send the barbell to a catch position on your front deltoids whilst keeping your elbows high when catching.
Start by standing, with a medicine ball on the floor between your feet. Squat down to pick the medicine ball up and fully extend your arms overhead with it whilst adopting plantar flexion (getting up onto your toes). Once in this position drive the medicine ball towards the floor whilst letting go of it.
Perform a squat with a dumbbell in either hand falling down to the outside of your legs on the downwards phase of the squat. Once you have sat down as deep into your squat as you can, release the dumbbells and jump/explode up onto your box.
Get onto your knees, hold a medicine ball tight to your chest with your elbows in. Allow your bum to sit down onto your heels. Explode from the hips to get your bum off your heels and drive the medicine ball of your chest as far forward as you can. You may fall forwards which is perfectly fine.
Start by standing, with a medicine ball on the floor between your feet. Sit down into a squat position with your arms fully extended in between your legs. Grab the medicine ball and start to stand, and when the medicine ball starts to pass your hips you should try to push up and ultimately release the ball overhead, generating as much power as you can.
Perform a low plank with your feet on the floor, our forearms on a Swiss ball and the rest of your body stretched straight and low, facing the floor. Keep your core tight, your feet together and your body in a straight position.
Fully extend your arms and legs while hanging off a bar e.g. a pull-up bar. Start to raise your legs (which should be straight) up to hip height, so they form a 45-degree angle from your hips. Keep your core tight and don’t allow your body to swing.

Even Wladimir Klitschko’s heavyweight title reign.
Numbers rarely tell the whole story, but with Klitschko, the numbers are getting to be fairly preposterous – 9 and a half years without interruption; eighteen successful defenses.
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2015
Landed: Klitschko: 52 Fury: 86
Power blows: Klitschko: 18 Fury: 48
Thrown: Klitschko: 69 Fury: 202
After Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) had broken down Wladimir Klitschko’s (64-4, 53 KOs) resistance, he broke down in tears, and then broke into song. All week the 27-year-old from Morecambe had promised he would show the world that Klitschko was too old and too slow for him. And now here he was, the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight champion of the world, relishing every second of his triumph by singing Aerosmith’s “Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” at the top of his voice.
“Technically speaking, Wladimir is much more sound than Tyson Fury,” former undisputed heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis told HBO.com. “But one thing Fury has got is gusto. If Fury has got enough focus and accuracy to hit Wladimir, if he is able to hit him and create a cut or a bruise or a busted lip, it should be an interesting fight.”
What ultimately matters is that at the end of 12 largely execrable rounds, Klitschko—cut and bloodied on both cheeks—had suffered his first defeat in 11 years. And Tyson Fury—and this cannot be repeated often enough, because repetition is surely the fastest way to reach acceptance—was the heavyweight champion of the world.

Did the Pilgrims know boxing? We don’t know that for sure.
According to Wikipedia the earliest known depiction of boxing comes from a Sumerian relief from the 3rd millennium BC. Boxing was a popular spectator sport in Ancient Rome. In order for the fighters to protect themselves against their opponents they wrapped leather thongs around their fists. In AD 393, during the Roman gladiator period, boxing was abolished due to excessive brutality. It was not until the late 17th century that boxing re-surfaced in London. The sport would later resurface in England during the early 16th century in the form of bare-knuckle boxing sometimes referred to as prizefighting.
The first documented account of a bare-knuckle fight in England appeared in 1681 in the London Protestant Mercury, and the first English bare-knuckle champion was James Figg in 1719. This is also the time when the word “boxing” first came to be used.
We see that first mentioning comes 60 years later after first settlers came to Plymouth, Massachusetts. But there is no other proof that they didn’t know boxing before coming. Maybe it was the Pilgrims or later comers who brought boxing knowledge to the USA.

Why do people have different hobbies? One of the most common idea is that people develop hobbies in order to get a relief from the stressful world they live in.
Nevertheless, while this fact is true it didn’t explain why each person choose to get rid of that stress in a different way? It is because hobbies reflect the inner most desires of people, help them fulfill their unmet needs and make them feel special. Many people develop certain hobbies to compensate for certain unsatisfied emotional needs. Sometimes the main reason a person develops a certain hobby is to protect a certain identity. We see that people do the same hobbies for different reasons.
We believe that boxing is the best hobby and sport to answer any needs. The same is about other disciplines we have in MK Boxing: Kickboxing, Mixed Martial Arts, Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, Cross Conditioning.
It is well-known that sports can make a significant contribution to your quality of life, even if you are doing sports only in gym it counts. Numerous academic studies show it can impact physical and mental health, social life and life opportunities.
Everything we do in our life runs on a motivation!
Motivation is one of the most influential factors in sports too: it is why person starts doing any sports at first place, and continues his trainings after.
Without a determination to improve sports performances. To get in the best shape ever, you must be motivated to do what it takes to maximize your ability and achieve your goals.
There could be a big bunch of reasons for that, but on the top we always find that the goal to start doing sports was wrong or you didn’t set any goal on the start at all.
Signs of low motivation
You may heard or saw how people were motivated to start doing something and later they say “I’m not motivated” and quit.

Many parents complain their children use most or all free time for gaming, regularly play late into the night. All this results in poor sleep habits which leads to significant interference with school, work, or relationships. These all are signs and behaviors that are almost always included in definitions of computer/video game addiction.
Kids who are easily bored, have poor relationships with family members, feel like outcasts at school, or tend toward sensation-seeking are more easily drawn into video game addiction because it satisfies needs that aren’t met elsewhere. Shy or socially awkward kids are at greater risk of video game addiction than children who compete in sports or participate in group activities like afterschool clubs.
Take away their computer or their game console and how will they spend their time?
One of the ways of weaning kids from video games addiction is to engage them in active indoor/outdoor activities. Helping them change will require some outside help. They need to build confidence in order to feel comfortable in the “real world.”
We believe introducing kids to sports like Boxing, Kickboxing or Martial Arts is what helps quitting computer addiction, or any other addictions, and it definitely helps them to build confidence.
In MK Boxing teens and youth are very welcomed. You can choose classes in Boxing, Kickboxing, Brasilian Jiu Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts or Muay Thai.
Kids may practice in groups or have personal training with an instructor.
That is what one of moms Donna C. did. Just read her story, maybe it will help you.
“I never write reviews but I wanted to write this one to help parents who have teenagers addicted to Xbox or PlayStation. I happily dusted off my son’s Xbox today because he hasn’t played in weeks and one of the main reasons is because he joined MK boxing in June.
He is 15 and in June during a heat wave, he refused to wear shorts or a short sleeve shirt because he said he was to skinny. He also was addicted to Xbox. I knew I had to do something so I looked around at gyms and boxing. The competitor was cheaper but the private lessons were much more expensive and I knew my son would be to intimated starting a class right away. Mike has a promotion of 3 lessons for 150.00. FAR below the competitors 79.00 a lesson. I called Mike and signed my son up. He started working out with Denis.
My son not only wears shorts but today was out without a shirt. He never gives me a hard time about going to boxing and works out in our cellar every day. We got him a boxing bag on craigslist and he is constantly using it.
I think because Denis has teenagers of his own and has worked for so many years with kids, that he has a way about him that doesn’t intimidate kids. He also isn’t a 25 year old, muscle man and so my son didn’t feel intimated. He is honest about what needs to be done but doesn’t make my son think that he has to work out 24/7 to be able to get in the ring. My son still isn’t in the ring yet because they stress safety and know that if my son gets in the ring and isn’t ready, that will be the end of his interest in boxing.
The gym itself is incredible. It is clean and welcoming. It is also very diverse. There are teenagers, middle aged woman, the usual jacked boxers, and just your average Joe. It is not intimidating at all. My 19 year old daughter has also taken lessons. They have classes all the time and my son goes to them.
I know I sound like I have some type of financial gain in writing this, but honestly I don’t. I just know what it is like to have teenagers who just want to play Xbox and he joining has made a really positive change.”

Most people we speak to say they are confused with what they should be doing in the gym in order to get the results that they truly desire. As personal trainers we understand there is a science to training people’s bodies to look and feel a certain way and we take that very seriously. To get the results that you ultimately want, you do not have to work out two to three hours per day.
It is not about how long you work out, it is about what you are doing in your workouts and if you are doing them in the right order and at the right time. We will show you how to do all of that and more. If you are interested in Boxing, Kickboxing Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Striking, we can certainly help you attain your goals and help you become proficient in any of those disciplines, and do it the right way.
