Welcome new instructor

welcome to our team

We are proud and happy to welcome our new instructor in jiu jitsu/grapplingHerb Chao .

Herb found jiu jitsu/grappling in 2011 through a friend who was an avid MMA fan. Having spent his childhood learning Tae Kwon Do and observing professional wrestling, jiu jitsu/grappling was a new branch of the martial arts that intrigued him quickly. Always keeping an open mind, Herb studies various styles of jiu jitsu/grappling and encourages others to do the same.

Herb is an active member and contributor to the Harvard Jiu Jitsu Club where he helps teach and also assists with the Annual Harvard Spring Tournament where various college BJJ clubs like BU, Umass-Lowell, Princeton, Umass-Amherst, Colombia, Uconn and Tufts come to showcase their skills. He has also competed, refereed, score kept, and helped clean up for various BJJ tournaments such as Good Fight, Grappling Industries, and Dragons Lairs.

The jiu jitsu/grappling classes will begin with a warmup consisting of common jiu jitsu movements such as shrimping, forward rolls, back rolls etc. The second portion will be technique where students have a chance to learn and drill 1-2 key positions and concepts such as guard, half guard, passing, etc. Afterwards people will have the option to either continue drilling and ask questions, or to spar (also referred to as rolling, open roll). Class finally concludes with everyone circling up for announcements before shaking hands and dismissal.

The class is a nogi based focus on grappling, however for those who have a background with the gi (or are interested in learning about it) are welcome to bring their Gi to incorporate into their rolling.

Any questions please feel free to ask.
